OBIT: Vermont Phoenix Sep 12 1873 Fri 2:5: DEATHS. Asher Spencer an old and well known resident of Brattleboro died the 4th inst. of Apoplexy quite suddenly. Mr Spencer was a native of Westminster Vermont but removed to this place from Greenfield. For some years he was associated with Daniel Kingsley of Springfield Mass in the staging business. He was a life long Democrat. He was a little short of 71 years.
Brattleboro Reformer & Farmer Fri Sept 12 1873:5:2: The death of Asher Spencer as recorded on another page was sudden and unexpected. Apparently well the day previous was suddenly stricken at night with what proved to be a disease of the heart and died in a short time. Mr Spencer sustained with ferver the various relations of life on which he was placed. In early days before railroads had crept into the state he under the firm of Spencer and Kingsley monopolized most of the stage routes leading into Brattleboro, but the introduction of railroads put an end to the monoply of staging. Mr S was an "out and out" Democrat of the old school and in consideration of which he sought and obtained the office of Postmaster of this village under Buchanan. The duties of which office he discharged faithfully and to the general satisfaction of those interested. Mr S was one of our promenant citizens respected in life and lamented in death.
